Ten years ago, as a woman "of a certain age" who didn't plan well financially, I emigrated to Ecuador. It was the best decision I've ever made in my "adventurous" life. Our "ex-pat" community now numbers around 10,000, but most of my friends are Ecuadoreans. I live in a gorgeous 5th floor 3-bedroom condo apt ($450/mo), and am in the "socialist" government health care system ($74/mo). I do thank Roosevelt for creating Social Security, so that I have a secure monthly income without having to work at this age. I shudder to think how my life would be right now in the US, with age-descrimination, no children or relatives to live with, and only social security income.
